Last week was Opening Day for Major League Baseball. Last season, on August 13, 2024, the iconic Camden Yards witnessed more than just a baseball game. The Baltimore Orioles hosted their inaugural Faith Night, transforming the evening into a platform for faith. Six MLB players shared their personal testimonies of faith in Jesus Christ.
Trevor Rogers, who had recently joined the Orioles, perceived divine timing in his trade: “The timing—the first Faith Night, my first start in Baltimore, that’s God right there.” His sentiment reflects Psalm 96:3: “Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples.”
Veteran catcher James McCann shared a moving story, asking the audience to imagine a couple facing a challenging pregnancy. He then revealed, “Open your eyes. I was that child. From day one, God has been protecting me.” This reminds us of the importance of proclaiming God’s works. Luke 8:39: “Return home and tell how much God has done for you.”
Jordan Westburg spoke about his journey, mentioning the struggles and triumphs he has experienced as a professional athlete. He emphasized the role his faith played in providing strength and guidance during difficult times. “In moments of doubt and uncertainty, I turn to God for clarity and peace,” Westburg shared. His words reflected Isaiah 40:31: “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”
Ryan O’Hearn and Gunnar Henderson each recounted personal stories of faith and perseverance. O’Hearn spoke about how his teammates and coaches have become a support system rooted in shared faith. Henderson highlighted the significance of prayer in his daily life, stating, “Prayer is my anchor; it keeps me grounded and focused on what truly matters.”
Danny Coulombe sharing how faith has shaped his perspective on both his career and personal life. He encouraged the audience to embrace their faith openly and to seek God’s presence in all aspects of their lives.
The Orioles’ Faith Night was a profound reminder of the power of faith in sports and beyond. It demonstrated how athletes can use their platforms to inspire and uplift others, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose.
