You’ve seen it, and maybe you’ve lived it. One person seems to coast through life while another can’t catch a break. Illness. Loss. Injustice. Abuse. You start to wonder, If God is good and fair, why does suffering seem so uneven?
There’s no easy answer to this question, but there is a faithful God who walks through it with us.
Jesus didn’t promise a pain-free life. In fact, He said the opposite: “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).
We live in a broken world, a world impacted by sin, free will, and the ripple effects of generations. Some suffering is the result of choices. Some comes from injustice. Some has no explanation this side of Heaven.
But God’s Word never dismisses suffering. It acknowledges it and gives it a place in the story. Job lost everything and never got a clear reason why. Paul endured beatings, prison, and a “thorn” in his flesh. Even Jesus, perfect and sinless, suffered more than any of us ever will.
The difference isn’t in whether we suffer, but how we walk through it.
God doesn’t waste pain. He draws near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18). He brings beauty from ashes (Isaiah 61:3). And He promises that none of it is meaningless (Romans 8:28). Your suffering may not make sense, but it’s never unseen, and in eternity, justice will be complete, and tears will be wiped away (Revelation 21:4).
If you’re in the middle of deep suffering, know this: God is not punishing you. He’s not absent. He is with you. And somehow, even in the hardest seasons, He is working to redeem what’s been broken. God doesn’t waste anything!
He sees you, He loves you, and He hasn’t let go.
