A child was born 2000 years ago. Children are born every day, but this child was different. Many, many people had been eagerly anticipating this child’s arrival. The Scriptures had foretold this birth, the arrival of a Savior who would illuminate the darkness of the world and bring salvation to God’s people.
God sent Jesus because of His love for us. It was God’s eternal plan being brought to fruition. Remember the why! John 3:16-17 says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.”
Ever since the fall of man in the Garden of Eden, the world, and everyone in it, was tainted by sin. Because God is a just, holy, and perfect God, humanity was separated from Him due to their sinful nature. But God was not willing to let things continue to play out this way. He loves us far too much to let us be lost to Him for all eternity. He created us for a far greater purpose than that!
So, what did He do? He sent Jesus Christ. Jesus’ death on the cross would create a bridge over the gulf that had formed between humanity and God. Jesus took on the fullness of humanity’s sins, past, present, and future, and took them to the cross. There, He defeated death and evil, freeing us from the clutches of sin if we follow Him.
Theologian and award-winning author Frederick Buechner said, “The birth of Jesus made possible not just a new way of understanding life but a new way of living it.”
Don’t forget, Jesus was born! His birth instilled hope in the world and continues to do so until this day. Just as the people eagerly awaited His arrival 2000 years ago, we should eagerly await His presence in our lives each and every day. He is our Messiah, our Savior, and He has come to show us God’s love.
