Last weekend was Mother’s Day!  There are so many wonderful stories and examples of moms in the scriptures. One of those is the mother of Moses, Jochebed. She was a Hebrew woman living in slavery in Egypt. She had three children that we know of: Moses, Miriam, and Aaron.

Moses was born during a troubled time for the Israelites in Egypt. The king had decreed that midwives were to kill all Hebrew boys when they were born, leaving only the girls alive. Moses’ mother Jochebed hid Moses in a basket of bulrushes and set him afloat on the Nile River. She did this to save his life!

Even Pharaoh’s own daughter disobeyed the decree when she found Moses in the basket and took pity on him, adopting him as her own child. Moses was raised as the son of Pharaoh’s daughter. Jochebed, in an astonishing example of God’s providence and mercy, became Moses’ nurse and was paid by the king for her service.

All of this was made possible through the love and sacrifice of Jochebed. She found herself in a terrible situation that would bring most of us to our knees. The Pharaoh, who held complete power and influence, ordered that all male babies be killed. Could you imagine the terror she faced at possibly losing her son?

How difficult that must have been for Jochebed to put her son in a basket and place it in the river. But God had a plan to protect and use Moses in a powerful way. Ultimately, he was used by God to lead the Israelites out of 400 years of slavery.

Moms have a difficult but crucially important job! The world we live in is tough, sometimes even dangerous. That’s why it’s more important than ever to trust God in everything, especially the protection of our children.

Remember, God has called us all to love and protect our children in a way that reflects His love and care for us.

Pray for your children and trust God to protect and direct their lives.
